Do You Know What Prevents Natural Sleep
The fact that all mammals sleep also suggests that sleep has a definite purpose. There are no rules about how much natural sleep is necessary. On average, adults sleep about seven and a half hours each night, but 8 per cent are happy with five hours or less, and 4 per cent want ten hours or more. Missing out on more than a couple hours sleep a night may affect your concentration and efficiency, and make you feel very sleepy, nervy, and irritable the next day, but it does not seem to cause any physical harm.
The body makes up for the loss without needing to catch up on all the hours of sleep missed. People who have been kept awake for several nights usually feel well recovered after a single sleep of about 12 hours. Altering the time of going to bed may make sleeping more difficult. This is because your body keeps to regular 24 hour cycle, the circadian rhythm, during which body temperature rises and falls at fixed times.
Normally,it is the lowest in the middle of the night and the highest in the afternoon. When body temperature is low, most people are asleep, but if you are awake at this time your physical and mental performance are relatively poor. When body temperature is highest you are at your peak of alertness and efficiency for the day. This is why sleeping naturally during the day may be difficult.
The circadian rhythm can adjust itself in time so that its low point coincides with your normal sleeping hours. This may take a week or more. This is what needs to happen, for example, after a long air journey, when the move from one time zone to another means that your circadian rhythm does not coincide with the normal night and day times in the place you have traveled to.
Research has shown that natural sleep is made up of two quite distinct alternating phases, orthodox sleep, which occurs mostly in the early part of the night, and paradoxical or rapid eye movement(REM) sleep, which is associated with dreaming. Both phases appear necessary for normal well-being. Some sleeping tablets appear to suppress the REM phase. This does not matter for a few nights but probably explains why such drugs when taken for longer periods lose their effect and may become harmful.
People with natural sleep problems find that they cannot get to sleep, or they wake up frequently in the night, or they wake up to early in the morning. Sometimes they may have more than one of these problems. Poor sleeping can have a number of causes. By far the most common is worry, preventing you from going to sleep, or from getting back to sleep after waking during the night.
Depression often disturbs sleep, especially through early waking. You may be disturbed by your environment, most commonly by noise, but also by someone else in the room, by light, heat or cold, or by the unfamiliarity of new surroundings when travelling. Irregular hours can set off sleep problems, shift work, travelling, or feeding a baby at night. Some illnesses may make sleep difficult, usually because of pain.
