Anger is an all too human (or animal) emotion that we are all familiar with. It would be hard to imagine a single person (or animal) that has not experienced or shown anger as even babies display this basic emotion. While there may be nothing wrong with feeling or getting angry, it is usually in the way that we express it that we fall short. This is because of the simple fact that once we get angry or over our limit, rationality tends to fly out of the window, leading to outbursts, and colourful expressions that can alienate and even cause other people to get angry at us in the process.

If you feel your emotions getting the best of you during these circumstances then it might be safe to say that its time to look for other anger management self help techniques as the ones you are currently using are becoming more and more ineffective. Here are a couple that you might want to consider:

Deep Breathing: During times of great emotional pressure, when you feel that your sight is starting to get dim due to anger, try deep breathing. Breathe in deeply and hold the oxygen for about two seconds before release, try to regulate your pace of breath as well. Deep breathing can immediately release the tension and pressure that is starting to build, taking you back to a more composed and rational state.

Avoidance: If breathing doesn’t seem to be working for you, you can also try avoiding the problem. It’s already a known fact that some people just tend to be jerks or insensitive towards what other people might think and by interacting with them you will only be fuelling your own rage, which can result to all out confrontation. Even if say, it’s your boss, you can always limit contact for when it is needed and just try to avoid as much as you can.

Pause and Think: While this method has to do more with rationality rather than alleviating your anger, but is one of the most effective when you really fee like exploding. During the aforementioned situation, stop and think further, ask yourself questions like; what will happen afterwards?  What good will it possibly do? Will it benefit other people or is it purely for self justification alone? Questions like these, might not really solve the problem outright but so will exploding.

Remember that anger can be channelled to more positive ends. You can use the aggression that you feel to send your message across clear and precise enough without having to step on anyone’s foot or ending up with putting your own foot in your mouth.
